Mi Nica

Right up there with seeing Al the best part of my vacation was taking a bus to Nicaragua to see my kids!

This is a picture right as we crossed the CR/Nica border. We had about an 8 hour commercial bus ride after which we were picked up by Don Benito. We arrived to Leon, the site of El Ayudante around midnight. It felt good to be home!

If you haven’t heard me talk about Nicaragua before then I will fill you in a little bit on why I call them my kids and home: Since my Junior year of high school I have been traveling to Nicaragua. They started as a trip with my high school youth trips and ended up being me traveling to Leon anytime I had a few spare weeks and enough money for a plane ticket. I work with the children who were a part of the El Ayudante’s child protection center. I could talk to you for days about the kids and their situation (I did my capstone for Latin American Caribbean Studies on children in Nicaragua). But basically what you need to know for this blog is these kids captured my heart and I think about them daily….thankfully Alex and I had the opportunity to visit them for a few days and get lots of hugs!

We got to have lunch with Jenny!

Went to the beach!

Took some of the kids shopping for new clothes!

And got to play, a lot!

The trip was good for Alex and I to check up on the kids and see how things are going! I already miss them so much!

One of the Best Days Ever!

If you know me well at all you know that I have traveled to Nicaragua more times than I can remember.  I have spent time with El Ayudante working with the children in the Child Protection Center they had in  place for children who for whatever circumstance could not live at home.  I often tell people I have 33 children of my own…oh how I miss them!

Since I was in Nicaragua last a wonderful thing has happened.  God has really worked in the families of the kids and all of them are now in healthy situations and the center has been turned into a day care of sorts for the kids.  One of the girl’s I am closest with, Jenny, however did not have a family to go home to over Christmas break.   The missionary family who led the organization has returned to the States because the mission the Lord placed on their hearts had been accomplished….and they brought Jenny back with them for a couple weeks!

So over break I got to spend a few days with Jenny and she got to meet my family!  It was so wonderful to spend time with her and to get to see her since I don’t know when or if I will ever head back to Nicaragua.  Also even though I didn’t get to see all the kids she got to fill me in on how everyone is doing, who is acting up haha, and how the center is.  Such a peaceful time and very comforting knowing that all of the children are happy and well cared for in their homes.

Here is a picture of Jenny and I at Tim and Ivania’s house (friends from Jackson/Nicaragua) for lunch over the break.  Such a wonderful day full of friends, spanish speaking, and food!

Un Día Lleno de Español

Español Round 1
Last week Kristen and I  met this couple Alex and Ruth who told us about their church, Bet-el Internacional, and invited us to come.  Well Kristen and I decided that we weren’t going to pass up an opportunity to hear Spanish and be in that environment; So Sunday morning I hopped in the car with the Walkers and we headed towards the church…let’s back track a second– when we asked where the church was Alex said, “Right behind Visions night club” ha so we figured, easy enough we’ll see you at 11:00.  Turns out the church wasn’t RIGHT behind the club and after Kyle drove around for a while we eventually found it.  Initially we thought we’d be late, but then realized we were culturally going somewhere different than what we were used to and as they would say in Nicaragua, we were on “nica time”… basically meaning nothing really starts on time anyways–which proved to be true Sunday.  We walked in and definitely stuck out since we were the only white people in the room.  A lady said hi to us, said come, and ushered us to the front of the sanctuary to sit.  Awesome.  The entire service was in English and Spanish, which turns out is not because we were there but because of the different generations that attend the church.  There are first generation people who typically speak only Spanish, second generation who speak both fluently, and third generation who speak primarily English.   After 2 and a half hours of worship and a sermon… yea 2 and a half hours, we headed for lunch.  It was definitely a fun and interesting experience.  I think my favorite part was singing “Alabaré a mi Señor”- a song I used to hear every night in Nicaragua when the church across from the street would worship/sing and play instruments as loud as they could… a fun song to get in to.  Below is a link to grooveshark where you can type in  Alabare a mi Senor to hear it.  This version doesn’t do the song justice…just imagine it being sung at the top of ones lungs with very loud music accompanying it!!

Español Round 2
I have finally figured out where I am going to meet my hispanic athletic lover haha….just kidding, kinda.
Kyle is playing in a hispanic soccer league–so to make our day complete I loaded in the car with the Walkers again on Sunday night and we headed for Greenville.  This is a picture of me in the  indoor gym that we went to which was out in the middle of nowhere (Kristen took the picture of me but you could easily replace her face for mine because we wore almost identical outfits)… and once again we stuck out because we were pretty much the only people there who were not of Latin origin.  To make things even more entertaining…Kristen and I sat on the wrong bench so when Kyles team scored or if we cheered for his team, we got some glares.  haha.  Also, there was a little, maybe 7  year old, boy who sat right in front of us and everytime there was a fight he would YELL “ohhhh myyyy gaawwww ohhhh myyy gaaaawww” really loud and turn around and smile at us.  Precious.  Anyways, we defnintely had our Día Lleno de Español and I got to spend some fun quality time with the Walkers.

p.s. Kristen has some more pictures up & you should just read her blog anyways : )
